Four private astronauts launched into space on Tuesday aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule as part of the Polaris Dawn mission. This five-day mission aims to test new spacesuits and conduct the first private spacewalk. The crew, including a billionaire entrepreneur, a retired military pilot, and two SpaceX engineers, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and reached orbit shortly after.
The mission is SpaceX’s fifth and most daring private flight, with the spacecraft venturing up to 1,400 km from Earth, the farthest since the Apollo moon program. The spacewalk is set for the third day, with the entire cabin depressurized as two astronauts exit tethered to oxygen lines. This mission, backed by billionaire Jared Isaacman, is the first of three in his private Polaris program.
The mission also includes scientific research on the effects of space on the human body, contributing to studies on cosmic radiation and the vacuum of space. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is currently the only operational U.S. crew vehicle, as Boeing continues to develop its Starliner spacecraft.
