South Korean prosecutors raided the former ruling People Power Party’s headquarters Wednesday as part of an investigation into alleged election meddling by jailed ex-president Yoon Suk-yeol’s wife, Kim Keon-hee.
Kim, 52, was arrested Tuesday on charges including stock manipulation, corruption, and violating political fund laws. The Seoul court approved the arrest citing risk of evidence tampering, following an 848-page submission from prosecutors.
Yoon, impeached in April over a failed martial law declaration, quit the party in May but had endorsed its candidate in June’s snap presidential election. Opposition leader Song Eon-seog denounced the raid as political persecution.
With both Yoon and Kim now in detention, South Korea faces its first instance of a former president and first lady behind bars.
