South Korean president says ‘no compromise’ on enrollment expansion

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol rejects negotiations or compromise on increasing medical school admission quotas by 2,000 seats next year. The government plans to conduct on-site inspections at 50 hospitals to address work stoppages by trainee doctors, with warnings of legal action against those not returning to work. Approximately 9,000 trainee doctors have been protesting for eight days against the enrollment plan. Health Minister Cho Kyoo-hong stated that legal consequences await trainee doctors unless they resume work by Thursday. The government aims to address the doctor shortage by expanding medical student enrollment, while doctors argue for protection against malpractice suits and improved compensation.
