South Korean parliament approves new probe into deadly 2022 crowd crush

The South Korean National Assembly has passed a bill to launch a new investigation into the Halloween crowd crush in Seoul in 2022, following a veto of an earlier bill by President Yoon Suk-yeol. The new bill, a compromise, establishes a committee composed of members from both ruling and opposition parties to investigate the tragedy. This decision follows talks between Yoon and opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, signaling a return to political cooperation. Pressure from victims’ relatives and the UN Human Rights Committee has fueled calls for an independent inquiry. The police investigation identified lack of preparation and inadequate response as key factors, leading to the indictment of the former head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. However, no senior government officials have resigned or been dismissed over the incident.
