South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested on Wednesday, becoming the first sitting president in the country’s history to be detained. The arrest follows his controversial imposition of martial law in December, which led to his impeachment. A joint investigation team detained Yoon at his presidential residence and transferred him to the Seoul Detention Center for questioning. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) has 48 hours to decide whether to extend his detention or release him. Yoon criticized the investigation as illegal but submitted to avoid violence. The Constitutional Court is reviewing his impeachment to decide on his permanent removal.
