A South Korean court is set to deliver its verdict in former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s insurrection trial on February 19, local media reported Wednesday. The ruling follows a special counsel’s request for the death penalty, accusing Yoon of leading an insurrection by declaring emergency martial law in December 2024 without a war or equivalent national crisis. Last month, the Seoul Central District Court merged three trials involving Yoon and seven senior military and police officials charged with key roles in the alleged insurrection. The martial law was revoked hours after being declared, and Yoon was formally removed from office by the constitutional court in April 2025. He was indicted in January 2025 while under detention, becoming the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested and charged.
