Senegal’s political crisis deepens amid president, parliament speaker fallout

Senegal’s political situation has become increasingly uncertain after former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced that his ruling Pastef party would not take part in President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s newly formed government, exposing widening divisions at the top of the leadership.

Sonko said that although some agreements were reached in discussions with President Faye, major disagreements remained over the direction of governance, leading him to declare that Pastef would not be represented in the cabinet. Shortly afterward, newly appointed Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô unveiled a 30-member cabinet, retaining key economic figures while attempting to stabilize fiscal policy and restore investor confidence.

The split marks a significant shift in the alliance that brought Faye and Sonko to power, with analysts warning that the dispute could lead to legislative gridlock, especially given Pastef’s strong majority in parliament and its central role in Senegal’s recent political transition.
