Scorching Fourth of July weekend leaves dozens dead across US

A severe heatwave during the United States’ 250th Independence Day weekend caused more than two dozen deaths across several regions, including the East Coast, Southeast and Southwest. New Jersey reported at least 29 heat-related deaths, many involving people living without air conditioning.

Temperatures exceeded 37.8 degrees Celsius in more than 20 states, with dozens of cities breaking daily heat records. In Washington, D.C., extreme heat forced the cancellation of some holiday events, while Philadelphia and Atlantic City also recorded historic temperatures. Officials warned that extreme heat remains one of the deadliest weather-related threats in the country.
