Yemen’s Houthi group said it launched a large-scale attack targeting Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh and the Red Sea city of Yanbu. The Houthis said they used ballistic and cruise missiles and drones, including an attack on a facility belonging to Saudi oil company Aramco. Saudi authorities said their air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile targeting Riyadh and stopped other attacks, while accusing the Houthis of targeting civilians and civilian sites.
The Houthis said their attacks were retaliation for increased Saudi airstrikes in Yemen and promised to continue an “escalation for escalation” strategy until the strikes and restrictions on Yemen end. The latest fighting represents a new front in the wider regional conflict that has expanded since US and Israeli strikes against Iran.
Iran has meanwhile called for an end to the fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis and said it has given conditions to mediators for restarting stalled negotiations with the US. The wider crisis is also affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments, which remains a key focus of the regional tensions.
