South Korea has urged Japan to honor its promises regarding the Sado Island Gold Mines, a World War II–era site linked to forced labor. Seoul said Japan failed to fully reflect the site’s history, including the forced mobilization of Korean workers, as required by UNESCO and Japan’s own commitments.
South Korea had agreed to the mine’s UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2024 after Japan promised to present the full historical context. However, Seoul says there is still no mention of the forced labor victims. The South Korean government said it will continue discussions with Japan on follow-up measures.
