South Korean officials met on Monday to address safety concerns regarding electric vehicles (EVs) after a major fire in an underground garage on August 1, which involved a Mercedes-Benz EV. The fire, which lasted eight hours, damaged around 140 vehicles and displaced residents.
In response, the government, led by the vice environment minister, is considering new safety regulations, including potentially requiring car manufacturers to disclose battery brands used in EVs. A meeting with representatives from the transport and industry ministries, the national fire agency, and automakers like Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen is scheduled for Tuesday to discuss these regulations.
The fire has heightened public concern, especially since many South Koreans live in apartment buildings with underground parking. Experts note that EV fires are harder to extinguish and burn longer than those involving internal combustion engine vehicles. A report shows that electrical sources are responsible for a significant portion of vehicle fires in underground parking lots.
