Felicien Kabuga, one of the most prominent figures accused in the 1994 Rwandan genocide case, has died in custody in The Hague at the age of 93, according to the UN tribunal handling his case.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals said Kabuga died in hospital while awaiting transfer to a country willing to accept him after his trial had been suspended due to ill health.
Kabuga, a businessman and media executive, was accused of financing and supporting the genocide in Rwanda, including backing extremist media and militias involved in the killings of more than 800,000 people. He denied the charges.
He was arrested in 2020 after decades on the run and later transferred to The Hague. In 2023, judges ruled he was unfit to stand trial due to dementia, and proceedings were halted while he remained in detention.
