Russia’s Ministry of Transport projects that by 2050, half of all vehicles in the country could be driverless, Deputy Minister Vladimir Poteshkin said Thursday. He noted that around 90 autonomous trucks are already operating on toll roads, having covered more than 6 million kilometers.
Recent milestones include an unmanned truck completing a 1,600-kilometer trip from St. Petersburg to Kazan and fully autonomous freight operations on highways around Moscow. Officials say the next goal is achieving full Level 5 autonomy, supported by new regulations and infrastructure. A federal law on highly automated vehicles is expected to take effect in 2027.
