Russia sues Euroclear as EU debates frozen assets for Ukraine

Russia has filed a lawsuit against Belgium-based Euroclear, seeking over $225 billion in compensation for freezing and using Russian assets, as the EU debates using those frozen funds to support Ukraine. The case comes amid an EU summit where leaders are divided over a proposed “reparation loan” plan backed by Russian assets.

Belgium and some EU states warn that confiscating the assets could violate international law, destabilize Euroclear, and trigger Russian retaliation. Russia has condemned the freezes as theft and signaled possible countermeasures, while EU and U.S. diplomatic efforts on the Ukraine conflict continue.
