ROK’s Lee Jae-myung elected as Democratic Party presidential candidate

South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, has chosen Lee Jae-myung, its former leader, as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election on June 3. Lee has been leading in opinion polls with a big lead over candidates from the conservative People Power Party, which will announce its candidate on May 3.

In his speech, Lee said that he would work for a united and happy South Korea, focusing on strengthening the country’s defense, leading in high-tech industries, and promoting democracy and culture. Lee previously led his party to a big win in the 2024 parliamentary elections and was expected to win the presidential nomination after easily defeating two other party members in regional votes.

Lee, 61, lost the 2022 presidential election by a very narrow margin. The winner, Yoon Suk-yeol, was impeached earlier this month over a failed attempt to impose martial law, which Lee had opposed. Lee also promised to help South Korea overcome its political and economic challenges and ease tensions with North Korea.

Lee has faced controversies, including legal cases. A court recently cleared him of election law violations, but he still faces other charges related to bribery and a large property development scandal.
