Beijing held the world’s first half-marathon for humanoid robots on Saturday. The robot Tiangong Ultra won the race, finishing the 21.1 km course in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Though slower than human runners, Tiangong impressed with its upgraded stability, heat resistance, and speed, now reaching up to 12 km/h. It only needed three battery changes during the race.
The robot, developed by Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, mimics human running thanks to advanced algorithms and long legs. The event highlighted China’s progress in robotics, with experts saying it will boost public interest and help improve the technology.
Science fiction writer Liu Cixin said such events show how robots could help in daily life, like caregiving and household tasks, in the future.
