Robert Francis Prevost, a cardinal from the United States, was elected the new pope on May 8, 2025, during the second day of secret voting in the Vatican. He chose the name Pope Leo XIV. The election followed the death of Pope Francis on April 21. The conclave included 133 cardinals who participated in the vote. After his election, Pope Leo XIV greeted the crowd at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
