Record number of Japanese local assemblies urge Takaichi to uphold non-nuclear principles

Local assemblies across Japan are urging the government to maintain the country’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles, amid concerns that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration could revise them as part of planned changes to Japan’s security policies. According to local media, 128 assemblies from 36 prefectures have submitted statements to parliament calling for the principles to be preserved, the highest number recorded since 2000. The principles, adopted in 1971, prohibit Japan from possessing, producing or allowing nuclear weapons on its territory. As the only country to have experienced atomic bombings, Japan has long viewed the policy as a symbol of its commitment to peace, while reports of possible revisions have sparked public concern.
