Southern Brazil is grappling with severe floods and mudslides, claiming over 50 lives and displacing nearly 70,000 residents. Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul’s capital, is submerged, with the Guaiba River surging to a record 5.09 meters, surpassing levels seen since 1941. The calamity extends to around a hundred other areas, exacerbating the situation. With over a million people lacking clean water, the damage is deemed immeasurable. The death toll stands at 55, excluding two fatalities from a gas station explosion witnessed by an AFP journalist, while 74 remain missing. Authorities are racing against time to rescue affected individuals.
