Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the 15th National Games on Sunday at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, marking the first time the event is co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
The opening ceremony, attended by IOC President Kirsty Coventry and Thomas Bach, combined official events, cultural performances, and technology to celebrate the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The torch, made from combustible ice taken from the South China Sea, was lit by Su Bingtian, Cheung Ka-long, and Li Yi.
The Games run until November 21, featuring 419 gold medals in 34 elite sports and 166 in 23 amateur events, with over 20,000 athletes competing. Guangdong will host major sports such as athletics and swimming, while Hong Kong and Macao will host events like fencing and volleyball.
Organizers said the joint hosting reflects the “One Country, Two Systems” policy and marks a milestone in the Games’ 66-year history since they began in 1959.
