President Xi calls on China, Germany to be reliable, innovative, cultural partners

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged China and Germany to strengthen strategic communication and mutual trust during talks in Beijing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Xi noted that, as the world’s second- and third-largest economies, both countries play a key role globally amid rising turbulence. He called for deeper cooperation under their all-around strategic partnership, proposing that China and Germany remain reliable partners, expand innovation-driven and win-win cooperation — including in AI and advanced technologies — and enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges. He also stressed support for multilateralism, free trade, and the central role of the United Nations, while expressing backing for stronger China-Europe ties.

Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the one-China policy and said Berlin values its relationship with Beijing. He highlighted the German business community’s interest in the Chinese market and voiced support for deeper EU-China dialogue, free trade, and coordinated efforts to tackle global challenges.

The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis, with Xi reiterating that dialogue and equal participation of all parties are essential for a lasting peace. A joint press statement was issued following the talks.
