The Philippine Senate has officially begun the historic impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, making her the first sitting vice president in the country’s history to face such proceedings. Duterte was absent from the opening hearing, while prosecutors and her legal team presented their initial statements.
A total of 21 senators attended the session, with Senate President Francis Escudero elected to preside over the trial. If at least 16 senators vote to convict, Duterte will be removed from office and permanently barred from holding public office. Sara Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has previously announced plans to run for president in 2028.
