Pheu Thai Party’s Srettha Thavisin elected as new Thai PM

Srettha Thavisin of the Pheu Thai Party becomes Thailand’s new prime minister with a majority vote in parliament. He received 482 out of 728 votes, surpassing the required majority. Pending formal approval from King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Srettha, a former property tycoon, shifted to politics before the election and now aims to address poverty and inequality. The Pheu Thai Party and its alliance can now establish a new government after weeks of deadlock since the May election. This followed the withdrawal of initial support for another candidate, Pita Limjaroenrat, due to insufficient backing.
