The Pentagon may allow limited continued use of AI tools from Anthropic beyond the planned six-month phase-out if they are critical to national security, according to an internal memo signed by Chief Information Officer Kirsten Davies.
Exceptions will be granted only in rare cases where no alternative exists and must include a detailed risk-mitigation plan. The policy follows a dispute that led Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to label Anthropic a supply-chain risk and ban its technology from Pentagon systems and contractors.
Anthropic has filed a lawsuit to block the ban, while contractors have 180 days to certify compliance.
