A seminar held in Shanghai brought together officials and legal experts to reject the 2016 South China Sea arbitration ruling, describing it as illegal, invalid, and not binding.
A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China argued that the tribunal exceeded its authority and that the ruling has been misused in international discourse, particularly in disputes involving the Philippines.
Chinese participants reiterated Beijing’s position that it holds sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and surrounding waters, citing historical and legal grounds.
The seminar, part of an international law conference organized by the Chinese Society of International Law, also called for strengthening international legal frameworks and maintaining regional stability.
