Palmeiras and Inter Miami both advanced to the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Hard Rock Stadium. Inter Miami led most of the match with goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez, but Palmeiras mounted a late comeback with goals from Paulinho in the 80th minute and Mauricio in the 87th. Despite strong efforts from Lionel Messi, he did not score.
The draw was enough for both teams to progress, with Palmeiras topping Group A on goal difference. Palmeiras will face Botafogo next, while Inter Miami will take on Messi’s former club, Paris Saint-Germain. Inter Miami was the only MLS team to make it past the group stage, as LAFC and Seattle were eliminated.
In another Group A match, Porto and Al Ahly played to a thrilling 4-4 draw at MetLife Stadium, with neither team advancing. Despite Pepe’s late equalizer and a hat trick by Al Ahly’s Wessam Abou Ali, both sides were eliminated due to goal difference.
