Pakistan experienced its wettest April since 1961, with rainfall exceeding double the typical amount for the month, as reported by the national weather center. The extreme weather throughout April resulted in numerous fatalities, property damage, and agricultural losses. Experts attribute the increased rainfall to climate change.
The rainfall in April was 164% higher than the usual level for Pakistan, particularly impacting the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan provinces. This follows devastating floods in the summer of 2022, which claimed over 1,700 lives, destroyed homes, farmland, and caused substantial economic losses. Climate change has been cited by Pakistani leaders and scientists globally as a significant factor behind the unprecedented and intense monsoon rains experienced in the country.
