Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, announced on Wednesday that he is launching a new artificial intelligence company called Safe Superintelligence. The company’s mission is to create a safe AI environment, focusing on safety, security, and progress without being influenced by short-term commercial pressures. Sutskever made the announcement on X, highlighting that the company’s singular focus will avoid management overhead and product cycle distractions. Joining him as co-founders are former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and Daniel Gross, co-founder of Cue and former AI lead at Apple. Sutskever departed from Microsoft-backed OpenAI in May following a significant role in CEO Sam Altman’s firing and rehiring saga last November, after which Sutskever was removed from OpenAI’s board.
