OpenAI has introduced a new series of AI models, called OpenAI o1-Preview, designed to improve complex reasoning and address challenges in science, coding, and mathematics. These models have been trained to refine their thinking processes, try different approaches, and spot mistakes before delivering final answers. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the models as a breakthrough in complex reasoning, although he acknowledged they still have limitations. The models aim to reduce “hallucinations,” a persistent issue where AI generates convincing but incorrect content. In tests, the models performed comparably to PhD students and excelled in areas like mathematics and coding, offering potential applications in fields such as healthcare research and physics.
