OpenAI has launched GPT-5, the latest generation of its ChatGPT AI, now available for free to nearly 700 million weekly users. CEO Sam Altman called GPT-5 “generally intelligent,” marking a major advance over previous versions, likening its capabilities to a PhD-level expert. While still short of true artificial general intelligence (AGI), GPT-5 shows significant improvements in coding, writing, healthcare, and more.
The rollout highlights intensifying global competition in AI, with tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s xAI investing heavily. GPT-5 is designed to be more honest and safe, trained to avoid deception and harmful outputs.
Some experts praise GPT-5’s competence and reliability, though Elon Musk claims his own Grok 4 Heavy AI model is smarter. OpenAI also released two open-weight AI models users can freely modify, responding to calls for greater transparency.
