OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has unveiled Sora, a software capable of generating minute-long videos based on text prompts. Currently available for red teaming to identify AI system flaws, Sora is also open to visual artists, designers, and filmmakers for feedback. The software, adept at creating complex scenes with multiple characters, motions, and precise details, can produce multiple shots within a single video. Apart from video generation, Sora can animate still images. While Sora is still in development, OpenAI acknowledges challenges with spatial details and specific camera trajectories. This release follows the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022. Meta Platforms, a major player in the field, enhanced its image generation model Emu to compete with tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon in the dynamic generative AI landscape. OpenAI is also working on tools to verify if a video was generated by Sora.
