OpenAI, Google DeepMind’s current and former staff warn of AI risks

A group of current and former employees from AI companies, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, expressed concerns in an open letter about the risks posed by AI technology. They argue that the profit-driven nature of AI businesses hinders effective oversight and that current corporate governance structures are insufficient. The letter warns of dangers from unregulated AI, such as misinformation, loss of independent AI systems, and worsening inequalities, potentially leading to “human extinction.” It highlights incidents where AI-generated images from OpenAI and Microsoft contained voting-related disinformation despite policies against it. The employees emphasize the weak obligations of AI companies to share information with governments and criticize confidentiality agreements that prevent raising risk-related concerns. They urge AI firms to create mechanisms for employees to voice these concerns without fear of repercussions. Separately, OpenAI reported disrupting five covert influence operations using its AI models for deceptive activities online.
