Europe’s surface water is under severe strain due to pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, and overuse, with only 37% of its surface water achieving good ecological status, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA). Only 29% of surface waters met good chemical standards, though groundwater fared better at 77%. Major threats include air pollution, agriculture waste, and chemical pollutants like PFAS. The EEA urges governments to reduce pesticide use, adopt sustainable farming practices, and restore water ecosystems to safeguard Europe’s water security amid rising climate-related pressures like droughts and flooding.
