China has the world’s largest fleet and the biggest cluster of world-class ports, according to Ni Di, a senior captain at China COSCO Shipping Corporation and a deputy to the National People’s Congress. Ni, who has worked in the maritime industry for 28 years, said shipping plays an increasingly important role in China’s economy.
He noted that about 95 percent of the country’s import and export cargo is transported by sea, while China’s international maritime shipping volume accounts for nearly one-third of the global total. China has established shipping routes with more than 100 countries and regions, including those participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. He cited the operation of Chancay Port, which now enables two-way shipping between Shanghai and Chancay, while Port of Shanghai has ranked first in global container throughput for 16 consecutive years as of 2025.
Ni added that China has more than two million registered seafarers, including about 970,000 serving on ocean-going vessels, forming a professional workforce supporting the country’s goal of becoming a leading global shipping power.
