Nawaf Salam declared a national day of mourning after Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed at least 254 people and injured over 1,100, with densely populated areas of Beirut among the hardest hit.
The Israeli military described the operation as its largest coordinated strike on Lebanon since the start of the regional conflict, carried out shortly after a United States–Iran ceasefire took effect. While Israel said the truce did not extend to Lebanon, mediators including Pakistan indicated it should apply.
Iran strongly condemned the strikes, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warning of a “regret-inducing” response if attacks continue. Iraq also denounced the operation, accusing Israel of undermining regional stability and violating international law.
Emmanuel Macron called for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire, warning the strikes threaten fragile peace efforts. The United Nations likewise condemned the attacks, describing the scale of civilian casualties as “horrific” and urging all sides to de-escalate and return to diplomacy.
Since early March, the escalation has killed more than 1,500 people in Lebanon, including children, highlighting the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict.
