Cases of infectious gastroenteritis linked mainly to norovirus have risen for five straight weeks in Japan, with surveillance data from the Japan Institute for Health Security showing an average of 9.48 patients per pediatric clinic in the week ending February 8. Several regions, including Aomori Prefecture and Nara Prefecture, reported clusters of food-poisoning incidents marked by vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, most confirmed as norovirus infections. One outbreak affected 47 diners at Hotel Towadaso, prompting a five-day closure after the virus was detected in guests and staff, while another sickened ten people who ate at Restaurant Heian, which was ordered to suspend operations for three days. Health officials advise disinfecting surfaces with sodium hypochlorite and washing clothing in water of at least 85°C for over a minute to help prevent transmission.
