U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday he had no intelligence indicating Iran moved its highly enriched uranium before recent U.S. airstrikes, despite reports suggesting otherwise. The U.S. used heavy bunker-buster bombs to hit three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday, aiming to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program.
President Trump claimed the program was “obliterated,” but experts and satellite imagery suggested Iran may have moved much of its 60% enriched uranium from the Fordow site beforehand. A senior Iranian source and European intelligence reports support this, stating the uranium stockpile was largely untouched.
Hegseth rejected the skepticism and criticized media for downplaying the strikes’ effectiveness, citing CIA intelligence suggesting the damage would take Iran years to recover from. While some U.S. senators confirmed the facilities were significantly damaged, they acknowledged that enriched uranium was not the target of the strikes, and that some remains intact. Officials are continuing briefings to assess the full impact.
