A Nigerian court has ruled that the British government must pay £420 million ($570 million) to the families of 21 coal miners killed by British security forces in 1949 during colonial rule. The Enugu High Court described the miners, who were protesting poor working conditions at Iva Valley Coal Mine, as defenseless and noted they were not engaged in violent actions.
The ruling concludes a decades-long fight for justice, viewed by many as linked to Nigeria’s independence movement. Lawyers for the victims called it a historic step toward accountability for colonial-era violations. The UK government did not participate or comment.
