Niger cancels gold mining permits, rejects UK oil licence

Niger’s military government has revoked the concessions of three gold mining companies and rejected an oil exploration license extension for Savannah Energy, citing failure to meet contractual obligations. Authorities said permits granted between 2017 and 2020 to mining firms Comini, Afior and Ecomine were canceled after the companies allegedly failed to pay taxes, submit required reports and comply with environmental rules.

The government also refused Savannah Energy’s request to extend its exploration and drilling license in southeastern Niger, saying the company did not meet the terms of an output-sharing agreement covering four oil blocks in the Agadem Rift Basin, the country’s main oil-producing region.

Niger currently has one operational industrial gold mine, Samira Gold Mine, which the government nationalized in 2025.
