Australian researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization have identified two new species of delicate mouse native to Australia. The delicate mouse, previously believed to be a single species across the country, was discovered to consist of three distinct species through the use of new genetic technology. The newly named western delicate mouse, eastern delicate mouse, and northern delicate mouse are the smallest of Australia’s native mice, with a length of up to 7.5 centimeters. The researchers emphasize the significance of this discovery for conservation efforts, as the two new species had not received attention before, potentially impacting population assessments and conservation strategies. The delicate mouse, evolving in Australia for 5 million years, faces competition for resources from introduced invasive species like house mice, black rats, and brown rats.
