NATO chief says Europeans have ‘gotten message’ from Trump on defense

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said European countries have responded to pressure from Donald Trump by moving to fully implement agreements allowing the use of military bases and logistical support linked to the Iran conflict.

Rutte said several NATO countries, including Italy, Britain, France, Germany, Greece, and others, are cooperating with US requests, although Spain has stated its bases cannot be used for the war with Iran. He also noted that more European nations are positioning naval assets near the Gulf in preparation for possible future operations.

The comments come after Trump criticized some NATO allies for not contributing enough and announced plans to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany. European countries have also expressed willingness to support future missions aimed at protecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz once the conflict ends.
