NASA data reveals ‘lumpy’ mantle inside Mars

A new study reveals that Mars’ mantle contains giant lumps of rocky material left over from massive impacts 4.5 billion years ago. NASA’s InSight lander detected these fragments deep below the surface before its mission ended in 2022. The impacts melted large portions of Mars’ early crust and mantle into magma oceans, embedding both impactor fragments and Martian debris. Some lumps are up to four kilometers across, showing that Mars’ mantle has evolved very slowly compared to Earth.
