NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams finally returned to Earth on March 18, 2025, after an unexpected nine-month stay in space. Originally meant to last just a week, their mission was extended due to technical failures with Boeing’s Starliner capsule, forcing NASA to arrange an alternate return via SpaceX.
Their SpaceX capsule parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast, ending their 286-day odyssey. During their extended stay, they completed experiments, station repairs, and even spacewalks, with Williams setting a record for most career spacewalking hours by a female astronaut.
The delay captured global attention, making “Butch and Suni” household names. Their return was expedited after President Donald Trump pushed SpaceX founder Elon Musk to accelerate their retrieval.
