NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have finally returned to Earth after spending an unexpected 286 days in space. Originally scheduled for a short mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule in June 2024, multiple technical issues forced them to stay at the International Space Station far longer than planned.
Their homecoming was further delayed by complications with their replacement SpaceX capsule, but they finally splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle on March 18, 2025. Their extended mission saw them circle Earth 4,576 times and travel 121 million miles.
During their prolonged stay, Wilmore and Williams became full-fledged station crew members, conducting experiments, making repairs, and even spacewalking. Williams set a record for the most time spent spacewalking by a female astronaut.
Their situation gained worldwide attention, with political intervention from former President Trump urging SpaceX to speed up their return. Eventually, a used SpaceX capsule was deployed, cutting some weeks off their extended mission.
