A federal jury ruled against Elon Musk in his lawsuit against OpenAI and its co-founders, finding that he filed the case too late under the applicable statutes of limitations.
The case centered on Musk’s claim that Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, OpenAI, and Microsoft had abandoned OpenAI’s original nonprofit mission by shifting toward a profit-driven model. However, the jury did not rule on the substance of those claims, only on whether the lawsuit was filed within the legal deadline.
The decision removes a major legal obstacle for OpenAI, which had faced the possibility of being forced back into a nonprofit structure if Musk had won. Musk has said he plans to appeal, arguing that the merits of the case were never fully addressed.
