Musk, hardline U.S. Republicans ramp up attacks on Trump tax-cut and spending bill

Hardline Republicans in the U.S. Senate and billionaire Elon Musk continue to oppose President Donald Trump’s new tax and spending bill, demanding deeper cuts to government spending. The bill, which extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and boosts military and border security funding, is projected by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to add $2.4 trillion to the U.S. debt over 10 years—potentially rising to $5 trillion if temporary cuts become permanent.

Musk, a major GOP donor and head of a government efficiency effort, criticized the bill on his platform X, calling it a path to “debt slavery.” Republican Senator Ron Johnson also rejected the bill for not addressing deficit growth. While some Senate Republicans dismissed Musk’s influence, others remain committed to passing the legislation.

The 1,100-page bill also lifts the debt ceiling, expands Trump-era tax cuts, rolls back Biden’s green energy policies, restricts aid eligibility for low-income Americans, boosts immigration enforcement, and eases gun silencer regulations. Democrats argue it favors the rich and harms the working class. The Senate is now set to review the bill.
