A WHO official emphasized that mpox, whether new or old, is not the new COVID-19, as it can be controlled. Hans Kluge, WHO’s Europe director, urged a global effort to tackle mpox during a UN briefing. He stressed the importance of acting now to prevent future cycles of panic and neglect.
Mpox, a viral infection causing pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is usually mild but can be deadly. The clade 1b variant, which spreads more easily, has raised global concern, especially after a case in Sweden linked to an African outbreak. The WHO declared it a public health emergency.
Kluge noted that focusing on the new strain can help fight the less severe clade 2, which has been spreading globally since 2022. Europe reports about 100 new cases of clade 2 mpox each month. Mpox spreads through close physical contact, including sexual contact, but there’s no evidence of easy airborne transmission. Health authorities are staying alert but don’t recommend mask-wearing.
