The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that climate change is driving the spread of invasive mosquito species in Europe, increasing mosquito-borne diseases. The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which transmits dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, is now established in over a dozen European countries. Dengue cases in the EU/EEA rose significantly in 2023. The yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) has also been found in Cyprus, raising concerns about its spread. Climate change and increased international travel are creating favorable conditions for these mosquitoes, leading to more local outbreaks of diseases like dengue and West Nile virus.
