A new European survey shows growing public support for closer ties between Europe and China, while trust in the United States is weakening. About 29 percent of Europeans now prefer Europe to side with China, up from 14 percent in 2023, with the strongest support in Southern Europe, especially Spain, Italy, and France.
Support for closer relations with the U.S. remains higher overall but has declined in countries like Germany, Poland, and the UK. Younger Europeans are much more likely to favor closer ties with China than older generations.
However, most Europeans do not want confrontation and prefer a balanced or independent foreign policy. The survey also found limited support for reducing economic dependence on China, as most people oppose paying higher prices for technology products.
