In Yunnan Province’s Jiangcheng County, a dedicated team of elephant monitors is working to ensure peaceful coexistence between humans and wild Asian elephants. Over 50 elephants live year-round in the region, and with winter reducing natural food sources, elephants increasingly enter villages in search of crops.
Led by Diao Faxing, the monitoring team tracks elephant movements across nearly 1,000 square kilometers, using drones and real-time alerts to protect both villagers and wildlife. Residents receive updates through messaging groups, allowing them to avoid areas where elephants are present. A government-funded insurance system compensates villagers for crop and property damage caused by elephants, helping foster a sense of harmonious coexistence.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to establish the Asian Elephant National Park, spanning over 38,600 hectares across Xishuangbanna, Pu’er, and Lincang. Authorities are progressing with habitat restoration, ecological repair, and public education, backed by China’s new national park law effective January 2026.
Diao said the goal is to create a safe home for elephants while allowing local communities to thrive through tourism and sustainable development, promoting long-term harmony between people and wildlife.
